We're turning eight! Can
you believe it? Our upcoming season marks our eighth anniversary of providing
professional theatre to young audiences! This year we are touring to 16 states and expect to provide more than 650 performances to young audiences in nearly every imaginable venue. Our recent sponsors have included the National Theatre in Washington, DC, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, and thousands of schools, libraries, museums and theatres.
2010-2011 is gearing up to be even bigger and better! We have actors joining us from across the nation, four brand new shows and multiple tours available at the same time! Between September and May we have over 55 weeks of shows available! What's more, we are thrilled to welcome NJ into our touring region!
But perhaps
we should back up just a little bit! Bright Star Children's Theatre was launched
to provide high caliber, professional theatre at an affordable and all-inclusive price. Our objective has long been to make our theatre company as accessible as
possible - reaching as many young people in the process as we could, a commitment
we proudly standby today.
Our season is
comprised of literary, curriculum- and character-education based classics that
are as entertaining as they are educational. From historical productions like
Heroes of the Underground Railroad to character-education based works like
The Lady of Bullyburg and Sadie's Spectacular Saturday, Bright Star offers
something for everyone.
The founders of
Bright Star Children's Theatre, Karri and David Ostergaard are no strangers to
the theatre world. And their commitment to professional theatre has garnered a
national reputation (not to mention a loyal following...)
Karri is an alum
of the prestigious Second City Conservatory in Detroit and a native Michigander.
A one-time high school theatre teacher and part time director, Karri's resume
offers a variety of theatre credentials. From 1515 Broadway and the reknown
Hillberry Theatre to directing productions at the Parkway Playhouse and
Asheville Community Theatre. Karri holds a BFA in
Acting from Wayne State University. Most recently Karri has become a proud member of LYLAS, an all female sketch comedy group and a regional favorite!
After graduating
from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a BFA in
Acting and a major in History, David began work in theatre's across America from
New York to New Hampshire, Virginia to North Carolina and countless states in
between. As a film actor, his work has been seen on everything from the Showtime
Network to the Academy Award winning short film, Two Soldiers. Since
co-founding Bright Star, David has undertaken the role of resident playwright
and heads up our design departments. He is currently under negotiations to publish several of Bright Star's most sought after plays.
Committed to
professionalism, they have assembled a talented and dedicated design team with
over 50 years combined experience in painting and sewing. Similarly, Bright Star
actors undergo intensive training and are among the finest of their craft.
Indeed, all Bright Star actors must have college degrees to be considered for
work with the company.
In the last few years
our list of supporters has grown substantially! Our recent sponsors include: the National Theatre in Washington DC, SC
State Museum, NC State Museum of History, Iredell Museum, Greensboro Historical
Museum, Carrboro Arts Center, The Broyhill Center, Newnan Centre for Performing
Arts, The Parkway Playhouse, HART Theatre, Creative Spark, KidSenses, North
Charleston Arts Festival, The City of Rock Hill, City of Albemarle, a dozen Arts
Councils, over a hundred libraries and literally hundreds of schools from Detroit to
